Both the <a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/jupiter-nasa-image-amazing-space\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">gas giant Jupiter<\/a> and our scorching <a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/feature\/venus-mars-space-exploration\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">sister planet, Venus<\/a>, are brilliant in the night sky this month. And you don&#8217;t need any equipment. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Find them in the west in the hour or so after sundown,&#8221; NASA explains.<\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;ll see Jupiter above, and Venus \u2014 which is the third brightest celestial object in the night sky (behind the <a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/sun-space-science-image\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">sun<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/who-owns-moon-resources-nasa-artemis\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">moon<\/a>) \u2014 below. For example, with the help of binoculars, you can spot two clusters of stars. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;All month long, observers with access to a good pair of binoculars or a small telescope can hunt for two easy star clusters using the brightest star in the sky as a guidepost,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/category\/nasa\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">NASA<\/a> explains. &#8220;They&#8217;re two open star clusters, M41 and M47. They&#8217;re called &#8216;open&#8217; because their stars are close together in space, but in sort of a diffuse structure.&#8221; The guidepost is Sirius, which is easy to find in the south skies during winter. M41 is just south of Sirius. By Feb. 27, it will have reached its first quarter. But watch for this lunar sighting: Also on Feb. 27, in the southwest after sunset, <a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/mars-long-cloud-arsia-mons-volcano\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">Mars<\/a> will make a close appearance near the moon. They&#8217;ll be under a degree apart, NASA noted.<\/p>\n<div class=\"mx-auto mt-8 w-full max-w-4xl\">\n<div id=\"video-container-hcgj6KsR-fc\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2><strong>Wild planets in our cosmic backyard<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>It&#8217;s a treat to be able to view nearby celestial objects with our naked eye as sunlight reflects off them. The two planets in view now, Venus and Jupiter, are wildly different worlds:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Venus: <\/strong>Venus is a rocky planet that&#8217;s about the same size of Earth. It&#8217;s also the closest planet to us. But on the ground, its environs are hotter than a pizza oven, at <a href=\"https:\/\/solarsystem.nasa.gov\/planets\/venus\/overview\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">some 900 degrees Fahrenheit<\/a>. The planet&#8217;s thick layers of greenhouse gases, <a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/carbon-dioxide-earth-co2\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">like the potent carbon dioxide<\/a>, trap copious amounts of heat. <a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/feature\/venus-mars-space-exploration\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">Its upper atmosphere, however, hosts more moderate, reasonable climes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jupiter:<\/strong> Jupiter is a gas giant planet, containing over twice the mass of all other planets in our solar system combined. Thick clouds and storms (largely of hydrogen and helium) swirl around the surface, including the Great Red Spot, which <a href=\"https:\/\/solarsystem.nasa.gov\/planets\/jupiter\/overview\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NASA notes has &#8220;raged for over a century.&#8221;<\/a> Jupiter contains a whopping <a href=\"https:\/\/skyandtelescope.org\/astronomy-news\/astronomers-find-a-dozen-more-moons-for-jupiter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">92 known moons<\/a>, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/nasa-europa-flyby-moon-science\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">fascinating world Europa<\/a>, which harbors an icy ocean beneath its cracked shell.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Look up.
