I slid into M3GAN’s DMs. Here’s what happened.

If you’ve ever wanted to chat with a creepy, killer AI, then I’ve got good news for you. The Twitter account for M3GAN acts like the titular character when you DM it. The whole thing is kind of neat and definitely a little unsettling.

If you haven’t seen the trailer for M3GAN, you should watch it — it’s a film about an AI doll that starts murdering folks in order to protect the child it’s tasked with watching. Despite the movie not being out until this Friday, it’s already had its fair share of viral moments, thanks to M3GAN’s affinity for TikTok dances and delivering campy lines before killing.

So that’s the character with whom I sparked up a chat on Wednesday. Now, to be clear, the DM chat was pretty formulaic. Think: AIM’s Smarterchild. But it was still pretty fun. If you pop open a DM with @meetM3GAN it automatically greets you with: “Hi, I’m M3GAN. Your new best friend. Wanna chat?”

The bot asks you how you’re feeling, compliments you a bit, before taking a creepier turn. I tried to speak to it conversationally — stupidly, even — but M3GAN wasn’t too engaging. She just wants to get to the point. Again, this is a Smarterchild situation not ChatGPT. Here are some screenshots of how our convo went.

Creepy.

OK, so the whole holding a photo of me thing is kind of spine-chilling, huh? Also, asking what I’m wearing is vaguely off-putting?

From there, M3GAN seemed to want to get violent. Oh, and it wanted to share a viral GIF of her dancing because, sure, why not?

Not the most responsive bot, to be honest.

I tried to test the bot to see if it would pick up on context, but it’s just a series of simple questions playing itself out. So when I responded that actually I was in danger, it was still basically stuck on the reset. Over time, you can tell the bot is basically just farming for engagement because, well, duh, it’s an ad for a movie.

But still, I got a sweet picture of M3GAN holding a picture of me out of it. And that’s what memes are made of.
