The 2022 Video Game Awards had a lot of shocking and unexpected reveals, including the first clip of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which is set to be released April 7, 2023. The clip was presented on stage by cast member Keegan-Michael Key, who offered a very in-depth and necessary discussion on whether Toad’s mushroom cap is a hat or part of his head — the answer is yes, it’s part of his head.
The first look of the movie shows Mario (voiced by Chris Pratt) being led by Toad through the Mushroom Kingdom to see Princess Peach. Many references to the Super Mario Bros. games are seen including floating blocks and moving platforms that serve as means of transportation.
For unconvinced fans of Pratt’s performance as Mario, don’t expect much from this clip, as Key’s voice performance as quite literally every Toad in the Mushroom Kingdom takes much of the spotlight here. The Super Mario Bros. Movie features a star-studded case alongside Pratt and Key, the movie stars Charlie Day as Luigi, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, and Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie comes to theaters on April 7, 2023.
