Giving Tuesday campaigns that help you give more, dollar for dollar

Each year, after a week of holiday celebration (and probably quite a bit of shopping), the public joins together to give back to the causes they care about. Known as Giving Tuesday, the post-Thanksgiving “generosity movement” brings millions of individuals, nonprofits, and businesses together to spread the spirit of giving — not just among us Americans, but around the world.

This year, the day of generosity falls on Nov. 29.

Part of the Giving Tuesday tradition includes corporate pledges to giving back, often in the form of grants, fundraising campaigns, or donation matching. Benevity, a corporate purpose software provider and giving platform, reported that more than $112 million corporate dollars were donated across 43,000 causes during last year’s Giving Tuesday.

Broadly, Giving Tuesday 2021 garnered an estimated 35 million participants, raising $2.7 billion in the U.S. alone. And it’s not just a monetary cause. The movement, which operates year-round campaigns, also reported an increase in volunteering, up 7 percent from 2020, as well as donations in kind — last year, giving items was the most popular form of giving in the U.S. In 2022, the official Giving Tuesday campaign hopes the swell of increased generosity (in whatever ways that manifests) only continues to grow.

To help amplify your donations, Mashable has rounded up some of the biggest donation-matching campaigns this Giving Tuesday.

1. Feeding America

From Nov. 28 to Nov. 30, for every donation made to national hunger-relief nonprofit Feeding America, the Dunkin’ Joy in Childhood Foundation will double its impact. The “double shot” support campaign will be capped at $1 million in donations.

Every $1 donated to Feeding America can provide at least 10 meals to families in need.

2. Meta

In a shift from its traditional onetime donation-matching model, Meta announced in November that the company will match any recurring monthly donation made to nonprofits on Facebook. Eligible users must sign up between Nov. 15 and Dec. 31, and the matching will begin on the second month of donations. Meta will match up to $100 per donation and $100,000 per nonprofit, up to $7 million in total matching across all organizations.

3. Sesame Workshop

On Giving Tuesday, every dollar donated to Sesame Workshop, the nonprofit education arm behind Sesame Street, will be matched. According to the organization, 83 cents of every donated dollar goes to programs and resources that directly help children around the world.

4. Walmart

From Nov. 25 to Dec. 25, Walmart customers who round up their purchases for charity through the Spark Good Round Up program will have their donations matched by the company, dollar for dollar. The promotion applies to online orders on Walmart.com and the Walmart app, and will be capped at $1 million.

Walmart will also award up to 3,000 participating nonprofits with a $1,000 grant (up to $3 million total) when they receive 20 or more Spark Good Round Up donations.

5. Human Rights Watch

Ending Nov. 29 at midnight, all donations to Human Rights Watch will be matched five times (that means $1 will turn into $5). The international nonprofit has a goal of raising $150,000 this holiday season.

6. DonorsChoose

On Nov. 29, DonorsChoose will double every donation made to classroom projects on its platform. DonorsChoose allows teachers to crowdfund for specific projects, classroom supplies, and more. The organization encourages donors to support public school educators in their area, a former teacher, or their child’s educators. Donors can also choose to support a designated “Equity Focus School,” part of the effort to combat systemic racial and socioeconomic inequity in education.

7. Instacart

Starting Nov. 29 and ending Dec. 4, Instacart will match every dollar spent on Community Cart orders with a donation to the national hunger organization Feeding America. Matching will be capped at $100,000.

The newly announced Community Cart program allows Instacart shoppers to give directly to local food banks in their area all within the app. To donate, tap the Community Cart banner in the app or on the Instacart website, then view shopping lists curated by the food banks themselves.

8. No Kid Hungry

Every donation to No Kid Hungry, a national campaign to end childhood food insecurity, will be doubled for Giving Tuesday, thanks to a matching campaign by Citibank. According to the organization, a $50 donation can provide up to 500 meals.

9. FEED Foundation

The FEED Foundation, a nonprofit funding organization addressing global hunger and food systems, is hosting a fundraiser for four nonprofit organizations (including the International Rescue Committee). The organization’s Board of Directors will be matching up to $50,000 in donations until the end of the year.

10. Immigration Equality

Running through Giving Tuesday, donations to Immigration Equality’s end-of-year fundraiser will be doubled, up to $50,000. Immigration Equality is a LGBTQ and HIV-positive immigrant rights organization that provides legal assistance and other services to LGBTQ immigrants and asylum seekers.

11. Chewy

For the company’s Season of Giving, Chewy is matching customer purchases with equivalent product donations to nonprofits, up to $1 million per week. The product matching will be capped at $10 million throughout the season of giving, ending on Jan. 3.

In addition, for every letter submitted to the company’s Chewy Claus campaign before Dec. 15, Chewy will donate one pound of food to one of their nonprofit partners, up to 15,000 pounds.
