Succession‘s penultimate episode ever left us with some big questions: Will the Waystar-GoJo deal actually go through? Who will become CEO? And of course, most importantly, what’s going to happen to the Roy siblings?
While we can’t answer these questions just yet, we can make an extremely educated guess about where the Succession series finale will take us. And it’s all thanks to a quick line of dialogue from Roman (Kieran Culkin) on the way to Logan’s (Brian Cox) funeral.
While driving to the funeral service, Roman asks his siblings, “Did you guys get Mom’s invitation for a ‘Caribbean air clear?'” Apparently, their mother, Caroline Collingwood (Harriet Walter), is planning a tropical vacation to recover somewhat from Logan’s death. Shiv (Sarah Snook) is skeptical — “Oh, Mom just suddenly wants to Mom now?” — and Kendall (Jeremy Strong) is a “hard no.” However, Succession being Succession, it’s highly likely the Roys will end up on this trip anyway.
For starters, when Succession mentions an upcoming event — like Connor’s (Alan Ruck) wedding, the presidential election, or Logan’s funeral — it always follows through on showing it to us. The show has also made a pattern of hosting its season finales in lavish international locations: a castle in the English countryside for Season 1, a yacht off the coast of Croatia for Season 2, and a Tuscan villa for Season 3. A trip to the Caribbean is most definitely in keeping with this pattern. Plus, Succession sleuths on Reddit claim cast filmed in Barbados, and an Esquire profile on Kieran Culkin references a “final weeklong trip to film the last scenes of the final episode of Succession,” meaning at least some of the Roys likely will be traveling to the Caribbean after all.
The most interesting part of Roman’s question is less so the Caribbean mention and more so the description of the trip as an “air clear.” This phrasing suggests that the trip won’t really be a relaxing vacation: If anything, it’s more of a chance for the Roys to clear the air with each other following weeks of emotional turmoil. Given everything Kendall, Shiv, and Roman have done to each other this season, looks like we’re in for one last spectacular Roy vacation blow-up. Bring it on.
The series finale of Succession airs May 28 at 9 p.m. ET on HBO and HBO Max.
