Spotify and BeReal are joining forces for the ultimate Gen Z overshare.
Starting this week, BeReal users can include what they are listening to on Spotify alongside their dual camera selfie. This is one of the first major updates since the BeReal’s launch in 2020, and the move reads as an attempt by BeReal to remain relevant after the app’s daily users dropped from 20 million in October 2022 to 10.4 million in February 2023.
The update will likely appeal to BeReal’s Gen Z user base who have been surfacing “BeReal for music” apps on TikTok like bopdrop, Kiwi, and Airbuds since late 2022. Between the hullabaloo surrounding Spotify Wrapped and cyclical, shareable methods of analyzing your Spotify data, one thing is clear people love to spotlight their music taste.
The cover art of the song or podcast a BeReal user is listening to will appear in the bottom right corner of their post. When you tap into a BeReal post it will feature the song or podcast details.

How to connect your Spotify to your BeReal
To connect your Spotify to your BeReal account, tap the music icon before posting your BeReal. If you want to connect your Spotify after posting navigate to “Settings” in the BeReal app. Then tap “Music” and follow the prompts. When your account is connected, Spotify will automatically reveal what song or podcast you’re listening to when you capture your BeReal. If you don’t decide not to share what you’re listening to after you post, you can tap “Private” to make what you’re streaming only visible to you or “Disable” to remove it completely.
Perhaps rather than running to post an obscure song on their Instagram Story, indie boys will carefully curate the song playing when they snap their BeReals.
