After a reportedly tumultuous production, HBO’s upcoming drama The Idol finally has a release date: June 4, following the show’s premiere at the Cannes film festival.
To celebrate, HBO has released a fourth official teaser for the show, co-created by Euphoria‘s Sam Levinson, Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye, and Reza Fahim. In true Levinson fashion, the sneak peek is wall-to-wall sex, drugs, and pop music, all accompanied by Britney Spears’s absolute classic “Gimme More.”
But the Britney Spears comparisons don’t stop there.
The teaser introduces pop sensation Jocelyn (Lily-Rose Depp), who is recovering from a nervous breakdown that derailed her last tour. She’s determined to become the biggest star in the world — or as one character puts it, a “truly-fucking-nasty, nasty pop girl” — and she thinks that mysterious nightclub owner Tedros (Tesfaye) may just help her unlock that potential. The only problem? The man gives off serious cult leader vibes.
However, based on the fact that Tesfaye receives top billing over Depp and that he reportedly pushed out former Idol director Amy Seimetz over her emphasis on the show’s “female perspective,” it’s clear we’ll be seeing a lot more of him.
The Idol premieres June 4 on HBO.
